Q&A with Oxford Chargers volleyball senior Bree Lyons
OXFORD, Miss. — Oxford High School volleyball player Bree Lyons’ senior year was quite an eventful one. She was awarded Oxford Eagle Player of the Year. She also broke an Oxford High new all-time record for kills earning an impressive 1,003 kills and 995 digs.
Talk about where you signed last month.
Bree Lyons:Â I signed to Itawamba Community College (ICC) on a full ride volleyball scholarship.Â
Can you tell us a little about the program at Itawamba?
Lyons:Â I really fell in love with the program they have there. They are really building something special and I am ready to be a part of it.Â
Who recruited you for ICC?Â
Lyons: Annie McGregor, the head coach there. This past season was her first season there. She came and watched my all star game in July. Afterwards she just approached me and she seemed like she really was interested in me. That made me feel really confident in knowing that I can commit there and know that she’ll have me step up in a role immediately and I would be an important part of that team.Â
Talk about what you play for Oxford High.
Lyons:Â I play outside hitter, sixth rotation.Â
What do you think are your strong points as a player?Â
Lyons:Â I am kind of all over the court. I start front row and my job is to block and get kills down efficiently and then when I go in the back row I am supposed to take care of the defense and be a good leader on the court.Â
What are some of the things you are trying to improve on to take your game to the next level?Â
Lyons: Well since I am only 5’7 playing the outside hitter position I am definitely going to be working on my vertical more just so it will give me a better advantage front row against taller people and defensively I want to be better at reading the opponent. Its a big part of the game so you have to be good at it.Â
What do you do to work on your vertical? I know you are probably doing some training. What does that involve?
Lyons: Yes, I do a lot of training. Obviously I don’t practice with Oxford High School anymore. I go to the gym on my own and I do a lot of leg based workouts just to make sure that my legs are still in shape and also being consistent with going to the gym and getting rounds in. It helps the more you do.Â
Talk about your experience here at Oxford High.
Lyons: I’ve been a starter since ninth grade. I got pulled up my eighth grade year so I am really built into this program for a while now. I think this season was obviously a difficult season because of our record compared to last year’s but I think it was a really big learning season for me in a leadership aspect. It helped me become a better teammate, a better leader, and honestly just a better person all around.Â
Were you born and raised in Oxford?Â
Lyons:Â No, I am from California. I moved here in 2011. I have been here longer than I was in California but it was definitely different moving here. When I first got here, I struggled a little but then I grew to love Oxford. I love this town. I am a very social person so you get to know everyone and become friends with them so I love that.Â
