Meet Piedra Vista tennis player Anson Harris
FARMINGTON, N.M. — Anson Harris has been playing tennis since he was eleven years old. At fifteen, he plays for the Piedra Vista High School tennis team as a sophomore. A personal goal in tennis is to win the State Championship. Participating in tennis in New Mexico is a lot about playing doubles. He says, 鈥淚t is challenging to process the doubles game, to know when to get the ball or let your partner get it. This can be especially true on rallies where there are more shots and more movement. This gets harder when you are playing at the net, and some guy is whaling shots at you. You only have a split second to reset and take advantage of every point.鈥�
The best advice Anson was ever given was to try his best and go down swinging. 鈥淣o matter if you are not playing your best or getting beat by someone, keep trying till the match is over.鈥� The thing he loves about this sport is the creativity and freedom that he has with his shots in a tennis match. When playing with someone, he can hit the ball wherever he wants. However, he always wants to hit so he can win the point. He says things like that make tennis fun to play.
His pregame ritual is to eat something delicious like a donut for no other reason than that they taste good. He is an all-around athlete and also plays basketball and football for PVHS. When he is not doing school sports, he likes to spend winters skiing and snowboarding. Being a member of the team has taught him to contribute to the greater whole, then to himself. At the end of the day, the most important thing is that the team is successful and wins.
Participating in any sport is all about growth and overcoming mistakes. Anson realized his mistake was not stepping out of his comfort zone, hitting the same couple of shots every time. He says, 鈥淚t was only when I started doing things I wasn鈥檛 comfortable with and surprising even myself that I elevated my game.鈥�
