Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy MS esports team wins state championship

CINCINNATI — Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy began an eSports team in 2021 and only a year later, they are winning state championships.

Coached by CHCA language arts teacher John Wells (CHCA Class of 2014), the team has had a strong start to the year. The students work hard and have dominated in the eSports Ohio League, which is the largest scholastic Esports organization on record in the country. This win is the first state win in Rocket League for the CHCA team after placing second last season (going in with an undefeated record). This is also the first year the team is competing in Mario Kart and Minecraft and players completed an undefeated season in both games.

Montgomery resident John Mitchell is a member of the Rocket League team.

鈥淭he student enthusiasm and community behind CHCA eSports has made our middle school teams powerhouses in their league,” Wells said. “We are thrilled to be competing at such a high level in eSports Ohio and are looking forward to continuing to defend our title in the fall season, but the most impressive thing each season is the way that kids from all different social circles and passions come together to form a team with a heart. Seeing kids improve and master teamwork, communication, and disciplines practice is great. Seeing kids connect with one another and form relationships that make them better young men and women is far better.鈥

These CHCA student teams (seventh graders and eighth graders) won the eSports Ohio Middle School State Championship in four competitions:

Mario Kart: Antonio Ayala, Sheila Bernard, Mya Federle, and Elyse Rusnak; substitutes Joselyn Baker and Ahva Bishop

Minecraft Bedwars: Antonio Ayala, Logan Francosky, Sarah Kate Rasche, Elyse Rusnak and Chris Waldron

Rocket League: Trevor Dick, John Mitchell and Liam Shubert; substitute Jacob Lott.

JV Smash Bros.: Antonio Ayala, Sheila Bernard, Solomon Brown, Evan Thomas and Chris Waldron.
