Highland Park HS athletics move to division 6A in UIL Lone Star Cup
DALLAS — With the success that Highland Park High school has experienced in division 5A, it will be interesting to see how our kids perform in the UIL Lone Star Cup with the move up to division 6A against schools with higher enrollment. The Lone Star Cup honors the best overall athletic and academic programs in Texas and is open to all UIL participant high schools. It is awarded annually to six high schools, one in each of the six UIL classifications (1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A and 6A).聽 The statewide competition began in 1997-98 school year. The Lone Star Cup was not awarded in 2020 because of the pandemic. At the time of the suspension, HP was in first place. Winning is based on team performance in district and state championships. The winning schools in each classification receive the UIL Lone Star Cup trophy and a $1,000 scholarship, not to mention the pride associated with being a champion. It鈥檚 not just about boys varsity football.
It is a cumulative award covering boys and girls individual and team tennis, cross country, marching band, military marching band, volleyball, robotics, spirit, swimming and diving, wrestling, mariachi, film, basketball, soccer, academics, one act play, theatrical design, track and field, golf, softball, and baseball. For the 3rd year in a row, in 2022, Highland Park High School won the 5A Lone Star Cup for the 13th time. The Scots鈥 tally was 21.3% higher than second place Lucas Lovejoy High School.聽 In professional sports you might call this a 鈥渢hree-peat鈥 and a 鈥渄ynasty鈥. HPHS鈥檚 13 wins are the most for any school in any of the six divisions. “What an outstanding job by our students and staff to win 13 Lone Star Cup titles since 1998,” said HPISD athletic director Rodney Webb. “It is a true reflection of HPISD’s excellence in all areas.” The Scots have also had four second place finishes.
Some notable HPHS 2022 achievements include:
- Competing in the state tournament for the 34th consecutive year, team tennis won the state title for the 22nd time and the 6th consecutive year.
- The Academic Decathlon team won the state title for the 6th consecutive year.
- The two boys golf teams finished 2nd and 3rd in state.
- The band finished 5th in the state tournament. The percussion section was #2 in state.
- The girls cross country team finished 5th in state, after their 43rd district championship.
To be sure, our community takes great pride in the consistently high level of achievement of our students, teachers, directors, coaches, and parents who support them. Will this level of success continue in division 6A? My guess is that the margin of victory in division 5A has been so great in the past that the programs at HPHS should continue to compete effectively even against the biggest of Texas high schools.
