Brighton High School Unified Bowling competes in CHSAA state competition

BRIGHTON, Colo. — Did you know 27J has a Unified Bowling team? What is Unified Sports? Well, those are great questions and we have some answers for you!!

The Special Olympics Unified model promotes meaningful social inclusion by bringing together students with and without intellectual disabilities through sports, leadership and whole school involvement. Brighton High School Unified Bowling is a CHSAA sport and in their 4th year of competition. The team is co-ed, composed of students with and without intellectual disabilities, calls BHS home and includes students from BHS, RRHS and PVHS.

Coaches Jenny Rutherford and Michelle Rice have been involved with Unified Sports for more than 10 years and for the 4th year in a row, have earned a seat at CHSAA’s state competition that was recently held on November 18th. To earn one of these elite spots, the team must place in the top 3 for their region which includes Brighton High School, Windsor High School, Strasburg High School, Greeley West, Greeley Central and Northridge. In BHS’ Unified Bowling fourth year, Coaches Rutherford and Rice have earned their 4th state seat, won regional competition in 2021, leagues in 2022, runner up in 2022 regional competition and placed 8th out of 18 teams from across the state at the 2022 Unified Bowling State Championships.
