Rochester HS boys tennis team earns sixth place at state finals
ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. — “If we want to improve from last year鈥檚 ninth-place finish in the State Finals, we have to improve our doubles teams.”
This was one of many goals set by the 2022 Rochester High School Boys Varsity Tennis team at a team meeting last spring. Following a 13-4-2 regular season record, they accomplished that goal, earning a sixth-place finish at this year鈥檚 MHSAA Division I State Finals, tying the 1999 RHS record. The team鈥檚 13 points breaks the record of 11 points set by the 1999 team.
And in an unprecedented move in RHS Tennis history, four players earned First Team All-State accolades: Brothers Clay (senior) and Chad (freshman) Anderson at the one and two singles positions, and senior co-captains and twin brothers, Nik and Sid Rangarajan at the one doubles position. Jerry Murphy, RHS Head Coach, said, 鈥淔our First Team All-State honors, that鈥檚 a first in RHS tennis history. It鈥檚 also the first time that any of our doubles teams have earned the honor.鈥�
Other 2022 accolades include: Ryan Loren, junior, State Finals quarterfinalist at the four singles position; Jerry Murphy, Regional Coach of the Year; and with a team GPA of 3.82, Academic All-State.
鈥淚n my 51 years of coaching, this team, as far as results go, ranks at the top, if not the best I鈥檝e coached,鈥� said Coach Murphy. 鈥淭hey set goals, created a family atmosphere led by the seniors. Their parents showed up for matches. They created memories that they鈥檒l always have.鈥�
Coach Murphy also gave a nod to the Rochester Adams and Stoney Creek Boys Varsity Tennis teams who also fared well in the state tournament, earning 9th and 12th place finishes, respectively.
