Hoover HS girls tennis team wraps up historic fall season
NORTH CANTON, Ohio — The Hoover High School Girl’s Tennis team had an extraordinary 2022 season, finishing with a 26-1 record (a school record), a number two ranking by the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association and the Ohio Tennis Zone, and a state runner-up in junior Tess Bucher.
鈥淭his was arguably the best tennis team in Hoover history,鈥 said Head Coach Ryan Shaffer, who earned his 1,000th win as a tennis coach in September of this year.
Among the many highlights of the season was a trip to the district tournament for all seven varsity players.
鈥淭his is unprecedented,鈥 said Shaffer. 鈥淭his is very rare for any team (to qualify all their players).鈥
They also won the Federal League Champion for the sixth straight year, their 13th championship out of the last 15 seasons.
Out of districts, singles champion Bucher, and the doubles teams of Claire Wood and Angelina Koinoglou (fifth place), and Cecilia Holben and Bridget Fink (third place), advanced to the state tournament. Freshmen Addison Sheil and Ema Papcke were also district qualifiers.
鈥淭o qualify as freshmen playing singles was quite an accomplishment,鈥 said Shaffer.
At the state tournament, Bucher advanced to the finals, losing a hard-fought battle to the reigning state champion. She earned First Team All-Ohio honors and is the Federal League and Stark County Player of the Year for the third straight year.
Wood and Koinoglou earned second-team All- Ohio.
Coach Shaffer was named Ohio Coach of the Year by the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association and is a nominee for National Coach of the Year which will be announced in the spring.
鈥淚t鈥檚 very special to be recognized by my peers and I certainly have my girls to thank,鈥 he said.
