Box Elder HS football team finishes with best season in recent history
BRIGHAM CITY, Utah — The Box Elder Football team just finished one of their best seasons in recent years with a record of nine wins and four losses and made it to the state quarterfinals. Despite a loss against Lehi High School, the boys played hard the entire game. 鈥淲e were winning going into the final quarter,鈥� said Coach Robbie Gunter, 鈥淚t took absolutely everything Lehi had to beat us; our boys played so incredibly hard!鈥�
This nine-win season was the first since the early 2000s, due in part to the hardworking team. Coach Gunter believes it has to do with them being a younger team last year and working to improve even in the off-season. Instead of getting discouraged by losses, the team saw where they needed to improve and were ready to take on the next game. This snowballed to Box Elder winning two games in the state playoffs!
Box Elder Football has also seen some of the best individuals and their equally talented team. Dax Sumko was the leading running back in the state, and Cole Mortensen was one of the leaders in interceptions. But it is also thanks to every man on the field that they did so well. 鈥淓veryone from our offensive to defensive line stepped up this year,鈥� said Coach Gunter, 鈥淚t took a team effort to make anyone succeed, and I want all of my boys to get that recognition.鈥�
The players made sure to support each other in each game. On Thursday nights, during JV games, the varsity boys were on the sidelines, cheering them on. On Friday nights, they saw the roles reverse perfectly to create an environment where everyone supported each other.
With key wins this year, Box Elder saw their abilities improving. Coach Gunter explained that his players worked for every yard, and each game came down to the end. It wasn鈥檛 easy, but it was rewarding for them to feel the hardwon season and will continue on that high for the next season.
