Meet Zeeland East HS diver Sadie Huizenga
ZEELAND, Mich. — Zeeland East diver Sadie Huizenga, a senior, recently won the OK Rainbow Conference diving title for the third consecutive year鈥攁nd right along with that victory, she was voted the High School Athlete of the Week in the Holland Sentinel (with 42.44% of the reader poll vote!).
A National Honor Society student, Sadie is no stranger to hard work. She has spent her life pursuing not only academics but also gymnastics鈥攁 sport she absolutely loved鈥攗ntil her body couldn鈥檛 take it anymore. At that point, she transitioned into diving (and track), but has had to work harder than most athletes just to catch up after starting those sports so late in her athletic career.
鈥淪adie won the conference title with her highest score to date,鈥� said her proud mom, Sarah Huizenga, 鈥渁nd she was able to shake off the nerves that sometimes tripped her up under pressure last year.鈥�
Because of her history in gymnastics, Sadie has greater leg strength than many divers, and Zeeland鈥檚 diving coach, Stephanie VanNuil, has certainly seen the advantage in Sadie, noting that most divers can鈥檛 jump as high as Sadie can because of her stronger legs.
