Q&A with Oxford HS football player Roman Gregory聽
OXFORD, Miss. — Oxford High School running back Roman Gregory has quickly established himself as double trouble for Oxford’s football team. Roman is not only the Chargers’ leading rusher, he’s also their leading receiver.
鈥淩oman’s versatility is definitely a weapon for us,” Oxford coach Chris Cutcliffe said in an interview in September. “He’s obviously excellent running the football, but he’s a great receiver out of the backfield. He can play slot receiver, so he can do a lot of different things well.”
Let’s hear from Roman about what to expect once he graduates.
Tell us about your senior season.聽
Roman Gregory: You know it hasn鈥檛 gone the way we wanted it to but we are trying to get things turned around. It’s been little ups and downs this season but we are going to get it on track. It’s like Coach Cut said we are in the plows now, we have our backs against the wall, we just gotta turn things around.
What’s the biggest thing y鈥檃ll need to improve on as a team to get these wins and to get to the playoffs?聽
Gregory: I think the number one thing is executing. You know we鈥檝e had a great game plan we just haven鈥檛 made plays and executed. You know that鈥檚 the number one thing just executing.
What are some things you feel like you have gotten better at this year versus maybe your junior season?聽
Gregory: Me being involved in the passing game more. I think that鈥檚 a huge difference from last year. Last year I didn鈥檛 get as many targets as I have this year so that鈥檚 a big thing.
What are you continuing to try to work on?聽
Gregory: Just doing my part and trying to help the team win. Do anything whether that鈥檚 playing receiver or wild cat quarterback or anything. Just do anything to help the team.
How鈥檚 recruiting going? Who all are you hearing from?聽
Gregory: I haven鈥檛 heard from any D1s but I have a couple offers from Northwest and East Mississippi.
What are some schools with the D1 programs that you would like to start showing you some interest?聽
Gregory: I could really see myself playing at Southern Miss or Mississippi State because they like to throw the ball a little bit too. I could play low receiver as well so that鈥檚 two schools.
What do you like about Southern? Have you ever been down there to see them play?聽
Gregory: No, I haven鈥檛. Coach Hall seems like he is a great coach. He has a good offensive line so I think it would be cool to work in that offense.
What about Mississippi State?聽
Gregory: You know they like to throw it a little bit more which I think I could play low receiver as well.
You play running back right now. What do you feel you do best at running back?聽
Gregory: When I see a hole I hit it and I think that鈥檚 the best on that really.
Do you plan on waiting until February to sign or would you like to sign in December?聽
Gregory: I plan to sign in February.
