Chelsea HS girls cross country team wins 7A Alabama State Championship
CHELSEA, Ala. — Chelsea High School has been competitive in the 6A division of Cross Country in both the boys and girls classifications for several years. This school year, Chelsea High School moved up to the 7A division in the Alabama State High School Athletic Association. This is the toughest division in Alabama high school sports and to top it off, Chelsea High School is in the toughest region in the state. So, when the Chelsea High School Cross Country teams began this season at the 7A level, the chatter wasn鈥檛 quiet, it was loud and direct: There is no way Chelsea High School will even be competitive at the highest level in cross country.
As the Chelsea High School Girls Cross Country team hoisted up the 7A Alabama State Championship trophy, the chatter went silent. The county school, located in the 鈥渃ountry鈥 now has the fastest girls in the state.聽 That is the beautiful thing about the sport of running. It鈥檚 not about the best facilities, equipment and money, it鈥檚 about individuals putting their best foot forward (literally) to run their best time for the team. It鈥檚 about teamwork, drive, determination and progress.
On November 5th, in the rain, at the Oakville Indian Mounds Cross Country Course in Moulton, Alabama, the Chelsea High School girls took first place with a combined time of 18:51:11 on the 5K (3.1 miles) course. Under the coaching of Trey Lee and Scott Fuqua, Chelsea鈥檚 girls had 4 runners in the top 10, in comparison to the other top schools who had 2 or less. With this championship win, Chelsea beat out the 5-time 7A State Champion, Auburn High School.
The competing runners were Seniors: Cady McPhail, Tyndal Ann Griffith and Joss O鈥橩elley, Sophomores: Juliette Edwards and Kylie Jones, Freshmen: Ty Cason, Evie Scroggins and Brylee Bennet and Eighth Graders: Mia Dunnavant and Lemme Floyd.
Congratulation girls! Dunnavant Valley is so proud of you!
