Bismarck-Henning Rossville-Alvin HS football team advances

BISMARCK, Ill. — Undefeated in regular season play, the Bismarck-Henning Rossville-Alvin high school football team took on the Westville Tigers in their First-Round Class 2A playoff game on October 28, 2022. The Blue Devils prevailed over the Tigers, squeaking by them with a final score of 43-35.

After the first quarter, Bismarck-Henning had a 21-14 lead over Westville. The Blue Devils’ offense jumped in front for a 28-21 lead over the Tigers at halftime. By the end of the third quarter, BHRA led Westville 36-21. The Tigers outscored the Blue Devils 14-7 in a fourth quarter nailbiter, but it was not enough to close the gap.

With the team’s running game sidelined along with the injured Michael Hackman, Coach Mark Dodd turned to his passing game and his junior quarterback, Karson Stevenson.

“With Michael Hackman out and the rest of our running backs being inexperienced, we had to make some changes,’’ Coach Dodd said. “Westville’s strength is between the tackles, so we had to go where we felt we had the advantage and that was with Ayden Ingram and Stevenson in the passing game.’’

Quarterback Stevenson delivered a school-record 421 passing yards, completing 13 of 18 passes. Four of those completions went for touchdowns of 65, 48, 61, & 51 yards.

“That is pretty clutch,’’ Dodd said.

Stevenson said, “Without Michael Hackman to run the ball, we had to rely on our speed and athleticism of our receivers.’’

Those receivers came through.  Ayden Ingram led the Blue Devils with six receptions for 172 yards. Owen Miller came through with 84 receiving yards on three catches. Chaz Dubois had 3 catches for 128 receiving yards against Westville.
