Middletown HS senior Riley Nelson commits to play basketball at Frostburg State University
MIDDLETOWN, Md. — Middletown High School senior Riley Nelson has committed to play basketball at the Division II level for Frostburg State University. Her brother is a student there now; her dad attended there; and her mother is in the hall of fame there for basketball.
Riley said, 鈥淚 have always been into sports. At a young age, my parents got me in it. I started playing basketball and soccer around the same time. In elementary school, I started to love basketball more. I did gymnastics for a year and was pretty good at it, but it took too much time away from basketball. In third grade, I also played tackle football. I was honestly pretty good at that, too. I played for the Rams in West Virginia, where I was a kicker and played offense and defense. I was in newspapers, and we went to the championship because of my extra points. My mom was terrified because she didn鈥檛 want me to get hurt, but I would say that was a good experience to go through. After that, I stuck to basketball, doing AAU for the rest of my teenage years. I still play soccer, but basketball is what I love the most.
鈥淚 love everything about basketball. I love the connections you can make, continuing to learn the game, fans, friendships, bus rides, locker room shenanigans, and just playing the game.鈥�
鈥淚 chose Frostburg because of the coaching staff. I really enjoyed my visit up there when I went to meet them. They were excited to see me and were open with me. I also chose Frostburg because it is not too far from home 鈥� but not too close. There are also a lot of new buildings and improvements all over campus.鈥�
Riley is undecided about her major but is interested in marketing and business.
