Unlock the door to be successful: An Alexandria Senior HS football coach鈥檚 perspective
ALEXANDRIA, La. — 鈥淎 goal is a dream with a deadline. Goals are the fuel in the furnace of achievement. If you don’t know where you are going, you’ll end up someplace else,鈥� writes John Maxwell, a longtime leadership and personal development author.
Maxwell鈥檚 words and books resonate with new ASH safeties coach Micah Dickens.
His work in development doesn鈥檛 stop at athletic training. He believes that developing the mind and spirit pays dividends when setting goals and managing expectations. Dickens, who joined the staff over the summer, always set goals for himself as a wide receiver back when he played at Grant High School.
After graduating from GHS in 2012, he walked on at LSU, where he actualized his dream of playing for the Tigers.
鈥淚 grew up watching LSU, it鈥檚 in our culture in Louisiana, so I always wanted to join that team,鈥� Dickens says.
His time at LSU exposed him to some of the best athletes in the nation, and it鈥檚 an experience that informs his coaching today.
鈥淥nce you learn lessons and then continue to work on yourself, the highest return is putting that knowledge to work and investing it into a player,鈥� Dickens says.
Dickens鈥檚 solid work ethic is one that鈥檚 rooted in his upbringing. His dad serves as a pastor and stressed the importance of hard work. 鈥淚 think that the harder you work, the more confident you become,鈥� Dickens says. His purpose in coaching athletes at ASH is to: 鈥渦nlock the door for them to be successful鈥�.
According to Dickens, ASH鈥檚 coaching staff strikes the chord of dedication to the players and precise detail to training. This gives them an edge as a competitive team.
His hope as a coach is to be someone who is respected and loved, but also one who drives players and holds them accountable.
For Dickens, wisdom and expertise are qualities that are hard-earned. His drive to continue growing as a coach comes from the same tenacious place that merited him a spot on LSU鈥檚 football team a decade ago.
