Get to know Cedar Falls HS volleyball player Katie Remmert
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — A nine-year-old record was broken at Cedar Falls on October 11th. Senior volleyball player Katie Remmert surpassed former All-SEC team member and Kentucky alum Kaz Brown鈥檚 career kill record with 1,174 at the MVC Conference Meet which was hosted at Cedar Falls. Remmert, the four-year varsity player for the Tigers, amassed 1,000 career kills just two weeks prior to her record-setting performance. 鈥淗itting a big milestone like that is very rewarding,鈥 Remmert said. 鈥淚t just feels like all my hard work over the four years has paid off,鈥 she followed up with.
Remmert has appeared in 38 matches for the Tigers so far this season and is averaging 9.1 kills per match along with 3.7 per set. Besides dominating as a hitter, Remmert sits at second for most assists on the team trailing just behind freshman Brynn Bakula鈥檚 842 which places second in the state. She鈥檚 also the team’s digs leader with 298, which is 43 more than the next best. Remmert has been a part of three state tournament teams with the Tigers, including 2019鈥檚 squad that dropped just nine sets all season en route to their state championship, a year after losing just one set in the regular season.
Like most athletes, Remmert has dealt with setbacks. Ever since suffering a Lisfranc fracture and a pair of broken bones on the outside of her foot, Remmert has been in and out of physical therapy and has had to find different ways to do things. 鈥淭here is a lot of pain throughout my foot whenever I push off and land on my left foot,鈥 said Remmert. An injury like this one seems pretty inconvenient in a sport like volleyball where you鈥檙e often jumping and landing, especially as a hitter. 鈥淭his has caused me to adjust my approach when I swing,鈥 Remmert said.
Despite her injuries, Remmert has carried on her skill as a hitter throughout the years for Cedar Falls and has consistently been a dominant force for the Tigers and coach Matt Johnson who has appeared in several state championships since taking the head coaching job at Cedar Falls. 鈥淢J has been a great coach the last four years and has really helped develop me as a player,鈥 Remmert said about her head coach. 鈥淗e鈥檚 got a tradition of winning and it鈥檚 nice to be able to play for a coach that takes pride in success and winning,鈥 she said. The Tigers will likely battle for another state title at the state tournament this season with high hopes of adding another trophy to the case.
