Meet the Spain Park HS girls flag football team
HOOVER, Ala. — The Spain Park varsity girls鈥� flag football team is now in its second season, and coaches Carmen and Robert Starr are excited for the future of the fledgling sport. 鈥淥ur goals right now are to continue to establish our culture and team identity, grow our team and the sport, and take the next step in becoming a top, competitive team in the state,鈥� said Carmen.
Married 27 years, Carmen and Robert both wear other hats at Spain Park 鈥� Robert as the girls鈥� soccer head coach, and Carmen in the Spain Park athletic department. On the sidelines, there鈥檚 definitely a rough-and-ready atmosphere, but the athletes and coaches are focused and intense, and there鈥檚 no missing the effort on the field.
鈥淭here鈥檚 a lot to learn, 鈥� Carmen said. 鈥淏ut it鈥檚 also a lot of fun, and these girls embrace the work.鈥�
Team captains are Lillian Gourley (senior), Evyn Williams (junior), Libby Baty (junior). The season kicked off September 18, and regular season games wrapped in October. The top two teams from each Alabama division will advance to qualifying tournaments, and the state championship will be played November 30 at Auburn University. 听
