Meet Wakefield HS athletic director Chancey Wolfe
RALEIGH, N.C. — Chancey Wolfe has served as the Athletic Director at Wakefield High School (WHS) since December 2018. He has held many leadership roles that helped prepare him for his current position. He was Athletic Director at South Granville High School from 2007-2010 and the Assistant Principal Wakefield High School from 2011-2017. He has also played and coached football, basketball, and baseball.
Wolfe shares that his most memorable games and tournaments are:
- Beating Millbrook in football in the fall of 2018. We were down big in the fourth quarter and came back to win with no time on the clock.
- Beating Heritage in soccer at home in spring of 2021, which also came down to the wire and ended dramatically.
- Winning the conference tournament championship in baseball in 2021 and beating Heritage at
home. The atmosphere was electric. - Beating Wake Forest in softball in 2021 – for the first time in school history – and then going on to win the first-ever conference championship!
Wolfe shares that the key to success as a coach is having a growth mindset. The coaching staff at Wakefield is relentless in their pursuit to be the best at developing and strengthening themselves in all areas of coaching. 鈥淓ach year, our coaching staff engages in professional development at individual clinics and collectively at our annual staff meeting. We continue to be reflective throughout the season and end the year with an evaluation process that fosters an opportunity for growth and development,鈥 Wolfe shares.
And when a coach is down because they lose a big game, Wolfe encourages them. 鈥淚 remind them that much is learned during a loss, and often that鈥檚 when teams come back stronger. I also remind them to trust their process and focus on the controllable variables of coaching and teaching,鈥 says Wolfe.
鈥淚 never want to take my position of influence for granted and desire to lead with a sense of urgency in all situations,” Wolfe concludes. “Excellence in leadership isn鈥檛 a mere act but rather a habit. You don鈥檛 just wake up one morning and start leading well. It takes daily repeated habits even in the seemingly small things.”
