Rochester Mayo alum Jim Johannson inducted into U.S. Hockey HOF
ROCHESTER, Minn. (BVM) – Rochester native and Rochester Mayo alum Jim Johannson is being inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame on Nov. 30 as a member of the Class of 2022. Johannson passed away in 2018 but has been a part of U.S. Hockey for most of his life.Â
As a player, he competed for Team USA in the 1988 and 1992 Winter Olympics. Following his playing career, Johannson continued to be a part of U.S. Hockey. He was a team leader on a 2002 Winter Olympics USA team that won a Silver Medal. Around the same time, Johannson joined USA Hockey as the manager of international activities and U.S. Olympic Committee relations.Â
By 2007, he was the assistant executive director of hockey operations and became responsible for assembling USA teams that would compete in international events. Johannson had plenty of experience assembling teams as he had been the general manager of a junior A team: the Twin Cities Vulcans.Â
Johannson was credited with helping Team USA win 64 medals – 34 gold, 19 silver and 11 bronze – in international play. He is also credited for creating the American Development Model, which is highly respected within the hockey community.
Johannson’s father, Ken Johannson, was the coaching director for the Amateur Hockey Association of the United States and even spent time as the general manager of the United States national team.Â
Jim played hockey as a child. Then as a senior at Rochester Mayo, he helped the Spartans reach the Minnesota high school hockey state tournament for the first time in school history. His play out on the ice earned him the chance to play hockey at the University of Wisconsin.Â
As a Badger, Jim played in 148 games, racking up 130 points, including 63 goals and 67 assists. He was a part of the 1983 NCAA title winning team and his time in Madison set him up for an eight–year professional hockey career.Â
Jim is one of five members of the Class of 2022, which can be seen at the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Museum in St. Paul, Minnesota.
