Get to know the Urbana HS boys tennis team
IJAMSVILLE, Md. — I would like to put the spotlight on our Urbana High School tennis team! This season brings something thrilling as our former seniors flew from our Hawks’ Nest. Our current seniors are hard-working players and always bring a high-quality match, which has gained them a magnitude of respect from their opponents. These players work diligently year-round to constantly improve. This team’s one of the luckiest because they are led by Coach Jonathan Walton, who not only teaches the game but also is there for life lessons that stay with you forever.
Our current seniors: Team Captain Gabriel Khawaja (myself), Team Co-Captain Javin Ahuja, Alan Kim, Rahul Harish, Tahir Haroon, and Nanda Kota, followed by 12 other varsity players, will be bringing their best to the courts to fill the 2 singles positions and the 3 doubles teams. Each senior reflects the high school’s core values and creates a culture of inclusivity. Furthermore, we hope to create a solid team that will maintain Urbana’s excellence.
With the thought of keeping our chemistry alive and our previous 16-0 record, practicing over the summer was a necessity, especially to be ready for the 4-month season and to succeed at the season’s county, regional, and state tournaments. Crossing an untouched boundary, which is practicing as a team during the offseason, proved to be a troublesome task initially. However, with the seniors’ collaboration, we made it happen.
We started off slow; rallying, net play, you name it. As the attendance increased, so did the intensity. Whether it be one of the seniors feeding balls for cross-court backhands or another running conditioning, we were reminded of what it takes to truly be a team. Once we stepped onto the court, whether you were a senior applying to colleges or a freshman who was figuring out the ropes of high school, it didn’t matter. Once the tennis ball was in motion, everyone’s thoughts were focused on one objective: keeping the ball in play.
Off court and on court, we never thought we would be such close friends. As seniors, we have come to realize that our friendships can be tied to our duration on the tennis team. The numerous memories we have created are forever remembered within each of us, and we hope to stay united throughout the season. Finally, come support the Urbana Hawks tennis team at our home and away games this upcoming season.
