Sycamore HS football team plays first true home game at new stadium
CINCINNATI — Sycamore Community Schools celebrated the grand opening of the brand new stadium at Sycamore High School Sept. 16. The grand opening marked the first time that a varsity football game has been played on the high school campus.
The night kicked off with a family-friendly tailgate just outside of the stadium with games, food and music. The community rallied for the first Aves Arrival Walk to welcome the team as it arrived at its new home. The Sycamore High School and Sycamore Junior High Bands welcomed fans into the new stadium with a special pre-game performance.
Sycamore alumni and Super Bowl Champion Mike Matthews served as the honorary captain for the coin toss. The Montgomery Fire Department hoisted an American flag from a ladder truck for a special National Anthem. Moments later, a hype video featuring the team and legendary former Aves coach Bud Acus played on the scoreboard as a World War II era T-6 Texan plane buzzed over the stadium, leaving a smoke trail in its path.
The $6 million project was paid for with a combination of bond issue dollars and private funding. Phase I includes a new 2,500-plus seat stadium, turf, concession stands, ticketing booth, and a grand entry plaza. The district is raising money for Phase II of the project, which includes new home and visitor fieldhouses. If the funding is secured, Phase II will be completed for fall 2023.
Sycamore football games have always been played at the stadium on the junior high’s campus, which served as the high school from 1926-1974. The old stadium was in need of many repairs and renovations and was in the way of construction of the new junior high building.
