Get to know Carlsbad golfer, Purdue commit Jasmine Kahler
CARLSBAD, Calif. — While school may have just started for most kids in Carlsbad, Carlsbad High School senior Jasmine Kahler already knows what her college plans are. The seventeen-year-old committed to playing golf at Purdue University in the fall of 2023.
Jasmine started playing golf at ten years old after playing softball and soccer recreationally. She plays out of Aviara, where Jason Puterbaugh coaches her. He says, “She was a late bloomer as she was really small for her age for a long time, but has an amazing short game, and as she has grown, her ball striking is catching up.”
Jasmine’s accomplishments have been impressive. In 2022, she was the Toyota Tour Cup Champion and finished in the top 10 in the Junior World event at Torrey Pines. Other notable achievements include Callaway World Champion in 2020, SDJGA Player of the Year, first-team CIF All-League, and the 2018 PGA Junior League National Champion. Jasmine’s hard work and dedication to being among the best in the sport have paid off.
Jasmine’s most significant influence in golf has been Rickie Fowler. On her tenth birthday, he signed a visor for her. She was lucky enough to spend time with his family on the sidelines while watching him play golf. Her dream is to make it on the LPGA tour.
Golf not only requires skill but also strong mental fortitude. The best advice Jasmine has received is not to fear failure. She says, “Fear being in the exact same place next year as you are today.” And the best advice she has ever received is to play against the course, not your opponents. Along those lines, she says overcoming prior mistakes and learning from them has allowed her better course management and improved her scores. While golf is an individual sport, playing as part of a team is an element. “Everyone has good days and bad days, but at the end of the day, your teammates are there to support you.”
As the oldest of four siblings, Jasmine is a role model for her three younger brothers. Brother Kenyon (13) also plays golf, while Adrian (11) and Marcus (8) play competitive soccer. Outside of golf, she enjoys baking, going to the beach, watching shows, and hanging out with friends and family. Parents Aaron and Julie are tireless supporters of all their children’s activities.
We wish Jasmine good luck in her senior year of high school and congratulate her on taking her game to the next level in college, beginning in 2023.
