Brookfield HS fall sports preview
BROOKFIELD, Conn. —Â
Varsity Girls’ Volleyball
Coach: Will Hendricks
This will be the second year as the varsity coach and third year at Brookfield high school for Coach Hendricks. Last year’s team went 14-6, with an early exit in the SWC tournament and a second round exit in the state tournament. A few of the team made the all SWC team but not the All State team. That may change this year. Expected to be stand out performers are senior captains Elisa Eddy, Katie Feeley, and Mia Vaccaro. They will be assisted by several juniors that will step up and play major roles.
Varsity Cheerleading
Coach: Angel Jones & Bianca Paollelo
The varsity cheerleaders are looking forward to supporting the Varsity Football & Basketball teams at their games this season. And they will take to the mat again as a competitive team this winter. The Brookfield Varsity cheerleaders had a great season last year working with the New Fairfield Rebels to compete as the Rebel Cats for the 2022 Competition Season. This year they will compete as the Brookfield Bobcats! They are grateful to have alumni Brookfield Cheerleader coach Angel back again to coach this season joined by our new coach Bianca Paolello. We are pleased to announce the following athletes who were awarded UCA All American Cheerleader distinction at camp this summer for their all around skills in cheer, dance, jumps, tumbling and leadership skills: Juniors Natalie Drace and Alyssa Eaton, and Seniors Gabriella Lepore and Casey Pratt. Captains this season are seniors Gabriella Lepore, Casey Pratt, Kaitlyn Zezza.
Girls Varsity Soccer
Coach: Barry O’Reilly
Coming off a year in which they won their first SWC championship, the girls Varsity soccer team expects to again compete for the SWC crown. With a first round elimination last year, they also hope to make a deeper run in the State tournament. The team will be led by All State performer Rylee McGee, Captain Ruby Casey, as well as all division players Abby Cristaudo, Stephanie Quiroz, and Brook Sterry.
Field Hockey
Coach: Megan Goyda
The team has struggled in the past few years however last year they really turned it around. Working hard during the off season translated into success in the season. They earned 7 wins against highly noted conference teams as well as they beat some tough non-conference teams. They earned a spot in the state tournament for the first time in a several seasons.
This season the team is looking to even greater accomplishments. In coach Goyda’s second season as head coach it will be exciting to see just how much these girls continue to grow on and off the field. The team will be led by three captains – Senior Shannon Ackerly, Senior Nina Tremonte, and Senior Anushka Manohar. Shannon finished last year with 18 goals, 3 assists, All-SWC team, All State 2nd team). Nina is a wonderful midfielder who really produces big stops for us. Madison Preston anchors the midfield with unbelievable speed and stick skills. Anushka holds down the goal. These are all seniors who have a lot of skill, work ethic and leadership.
Varsity Dance Team
Brookfield High School Varsity Dance Team is looking forward to a wonderful season with our largest team since the pandemic! The team is being lead by coaches Samantha Flook and Alysa O’Donovan along with Senior captain Elizabeth Destefano, Senior captain Jadyn Lalier and Sophomore captain Melissa Baines.

The Bobcats are determined to challenge their SWC rivals this season and are focused on qualifying multiple swimmers and divers for the Class M State Championship in November. Ella Behling will be a strong contender in the 200IM and 100 Breaststroke this season as a returning state qualifier. Trisha Chennuru, an SWC finalist on the 1m Diving board has her eyes set on qualifying for the Class M Championship this season, and Kayleigh O’Connor adds depth to the team in the sprint, IM and Breaststroke events. Ava Gravgaard, the defending SWC Diving champion, returns to the diving board for her junior year. Ava will also compete in the 50 free and play an active role on relays for the Bobcats as well. Boys Varsity Golf
Coach: Rich Brenia
Last year was a successful one for the golf team as they qualified for both eh SWC and State tournaments. With lots of returning starters the team is expecting at least a top 3 finish in the SWC. The team will be led by Captain Tim Whitlock with strong play expected from juniors Tyler O’Connor, Zach Kanych, and Nate Schmidt
Boys Varsity Soccer
Coach: David Lavery
For seven consecutive seasons, the team has made both the SWC and State tournaments. A perennial powerhouse, they are expected to challenge for both the SWC and State championships again this year. The team will be led by Captains Ryan Sharpe, Jack Morlock, and Jack Ryan.
Varsity Football
Coach: Bryan Muller
Brookfield Football is looking to build on momentum gained from last year’s 4-6 record. Lead by a great senior group (Caden Borges, Alex Smith, Calvin Swenson, Troy Sylvia, Avedis Avanessian, Evan Bergeron, Chaz Hiatrides, Harrison Jenkins, Aiden Howell, Ethan Rawding, and Alex Miller) the team expects to be competitive and play at a higher level.
With small senior class numbers, Coach Muller will be looking upon the younger classes to step and follow the seniors. Returning from starting roles as sophomores, the offensive line will be anchored by now juniors Brendon Longworth and Curtis Forcier. The defense is returning junior Carter Sacharewitz from last year’s starting lineup.
Two year starting QB Caden Borges (SR) is back after throwing for 1400 yards last year. Alex Smith (SR) returns as one of the leading tacklers from last year. Also returning from starting roles as juniors are Evan Bergeron and Chaz Hiatrides
Girls and Boys Cross Country
Coaches: Ed Butt & Alene Lofink
Both teams had successful seasons last year. Goals for this year include staying injury free and as usual be in the post season mix. The girls will be led by Meghan Gilbrault, an all-state selection last year. The boys will feature Omkar Marlappanar, a second team all SWC last year, and Evan Belles. But to achieve their stated goals others will have to step up by working hard and smart.
