Cam Newton, Richard Dent among Atlanta’s top 10 NFL stars
5. Joey Browner, DB, Southwest
Browner spent his first two years of high school in Ohio, but transferred to Southwest where he starred in his junior and senior seasons. Although his family had a history at Notre Dame, Browner chose to play his college football at USC. With the Trojans, Browner proved to be a ballhawk with nine interceptions over his four years in Southern California, also racking up nearly 250 tackles and three touchdowns. He became a first-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings in 1983, selected No. 19 overall. Browner racked up three interceptions as a role player across his first two NFL seasons. However, his breakout began as a full-time starter in 1985, as Browner earned the first of six-consecutive Pro Bowl selections. In 1987, the USC product earned first-team All-Pro honors, grabbing a then career-high six interceptions, a mark he would best in 1990. The 6-foot-2 corner was again a first-team All-Pro in that season as well as in 1988. He would go on to spend one brief year in Tampa to end his career in 1992, but will go down as one of the Vikings’ best secondary players. It came as no surprise either, as Browner is one of six members of his family to go on to play in the NFL.
