Calais Campbell, Phillip Lindsay among Denver鈥檚 top 5 NFL stars
1. Calais Campbell, DE, Denver South
Yet another Denver South product wraps up the list, and he is one of the best defensive lineman the NFL has seen through the last decade or so. Like Lindsay, Campbell was also an absolute star on the basketball court and in track, but football was his main calling as he had 57 sacks in his high school career — 38 of which came in his final two seasons.
With multiple Power 5 offers, Campbell chose to play college football at Miami where his stardom continued to grow. In his first season on the field for the Hurricanes in 2005, Campbell produced a modest 24 tackles and 2.5 sacks. However, the 2006 season was a different story as the defensive end became dominant with 10.5 sacks, 20.5 tackles for loss and 55 tackles overall. Producing similar numbers in 2007, Campbell finished his Miami career with 129 tackles and 19.5 sacks, also adding a forced fumble and interception.聽
Campbell鈥檚 upside was seen by the Arizona Cardinals as he was selected 50th overall by the franchise in the 2008 NFL Draft. Although his career started a bit slow in the stat sheet, Campbell became an immediate force for the Arizona defensive line and made a Super Bowl appearance to end his rookie season, a game in which he made two tackles. Campbell would tally six or more sacks in each season from 2009 to 2014, with the final year of that stretch being his first Pro Bowl appearance. He would make the Pro Bowl again the following year and had another strong 2016 season before signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2017. There, he helped change the culture of the defense with a career year, leading the Jags all the way to the AFC Championship game during an All-Pro season in 2017 as he totaled 14.5 sacks.聽

Campbell had 16.5 sacks in the remaining two years of his Jaguars tenure, making two more Pro Bowl appearances. He would earn his fourth consecutive Pro Bowl selection with Baltimore in 2020 and continues his career with the Ravens currently. A durable player making a Hall of Fame case with each season, Campbell鈥檚 current NFL career totals include 773 tackles, 161 tackles for loss, 93.5 sacks and 14 forced fumbles. One of Campbell鈥檚 greatest career highlights also came when he won the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award in 2019.
I am extremely honored to receive the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award. This is the most prestigious award in all of sports and it represents everything that is good about the game of football. This journey has been incredible…but I feel like we are just getting started. 馃檹馃従
