Northwood football prepares for first season in Great Midwest Athletic Conference
MIDLAND, Mich. — Northwood University kicks off its first season as a member of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) on Saturday, Sept. 3, with a home field match up against Kentucky Wesleyan. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
Established in 2011–12, the GMAC is an active NCAA Division II conference with membership in Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, and Tennessee. In addition to Northwood, GMAC’s full member institutions include Ashland University, Cedarville University, University of Findlay, Hillsdale College, Kentucky Wesleyan College, Lake Erie College, Malone University, Ohio Dominican University, Tiffin University, Trevecca Nazarene University, Ursuline College, and Walsh University. Thomas More is slated to join the GMAC conference as a provisional member for the 2023-24 academic year.
“We are thrilled to officially be a part of the GMAC,” Northwood University President Kent MacDonald said in a news release. “The GMAC gives our student-athletes the chance to compete in a private school conference with institutions of similar size, shared values, independent philosophy, scholarship levels and focus on a high-quality academic experience. It is a great fit for us. We believe it opens new opportunities for our student-athletes, as well as increasing our Institution’s footprint and reach across the country. Northwood University sees this move as a unique opportunity that aligns well with our growth plans, and we appreciate the GMAC members welcoming us.”
Northwood’s 2022 football season includes home games against Madonna on Sept. 10, Saginaw Valley State University on Sept. 17, Hillsdale on Oct. 15, Ohio Dominican on Nov. 5, and Walsh on Nov. 12.
Homecoming festivities are part of the Sept. 17 gridiron battle with SVSU. Later that evening, Northwood will host its 16th annual Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony. This year’s class of honorees includes Kylen Cieslak (Women’s Cross Country/Track & Field), John Cooper (Lacrosse), Fred Kelly (Contributor), Stacey Klonowski (Softball) and Ivan Lowe (Men’s Track & Field).
