Get to know Methacton HS football coach Brian Kennedy

NORRISTOWN, Pa. — With his first season in the books, Coach Brian Kennedy and Methacton鈥檚 Football Team is ready to take on the 2022 High School Football season.

鈥淭he first year taught me about communication. Communication with all stake holders: administration, parents, community, and the players,鈥 said Coach Kennedy. 鈥淚t took a few weeks to spread the message about the 鈥淲arrior Way鈥 鈥 the way we do things.鈥

Kennedy added, “There are many ways to do things 鈥 football schemes, how we handle issues, how we operate. Everyone needs to believe in one way, our 鈥淲arrior Way鈥, our culture. Having a full off-season to evaluate and shape our culture has been valuable.”

Football, fitness, and athletics has been a lifetime passion of Kennedy鈥檚. At Norristown Area High School, he played football, wrestled, and threw shotput and discus for the Track and Field team. Kennedy continued his football career at West Chester University for two seasons.

Kennedy鈥檚 coaching career began in 1984 while he was still in college. After a knee injury slowed his college playing opportunity and he knew his career was coming to an end, he wanted to stay active in the game and coaching was the next step in doing so. Kennedy鈥檚 first coaching position was at Abington Senior High School for Coach Doug Moister, a Methacton graduate. He started as a 9th grade coach and scouting coordinator.

Kennedy graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education in 1986 from West Chester University. After coaching at Abington High School, he continued to learn the game in a new way and was fortunate that Coach Roger Grove asked him to join his staff at Norristown Area High School. This also allowed Kennedy the chance to begin his teaching career. He coached for 17 years for Roger Grove.

After retiring from 29 years of teaching in Norristown, he had the opportunity to coach at several local schools before getting the opportunity to become Head Coach at Methacton High School last summer, just two weeks before summer football camp.

In the middle of all this football, Kennedy married his high school sweetheart, Becky, and they started a family. Now married for 36 years, they have four grown children, Brian Jr., Jonathan, Brianna, Jennifer and four Labrador fur babies, Morgan, Reagan, Sage, and Teagan. They still reside in the Norristown area. 鈥淚 learned the game and how to coach/teach football from Coach Grove at Norristown,鈥 Kennedy stated. 鈥淎fter his retirement, I began a coaching journey that allowed me to see and hear all different ideas and philosophies of coaching and this ultimately led me to formulate our 鈥淲arrior Way鈥 of doing things.鈥

Kennedy says, 鈥淭he 2022 football season looks exciting! We look to be competitive in the PAC, build on last year鈥檚 5-5 record and play meaningful games into late October.鈥 He added, 鈥淲e have moved down to the 5A classification this season and hope to get into the playoffs.鈥

Additionally, Kennedy looks to build relationships with alumni and make them proud of our Football Program.聽 He hopes to bring back some former players to speak to current players about their experiences at Methacton and how football had an impact on their lives. Coach Kennedy welcomes anyone to visit them at practice and attend their games.
鈥淐ome on out and cheer us on! Your support is always appreciated.鈥 Kennedy concluded.
