Q&A with Ocean View head football coach Jimmy Welker
HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. — Meet Ocean View High School鈥檚 varsity football coach, Jimmy Welker, and learn what鈥檚 ahead for the Seahawks this season.
How did you get into football, and what is your background in the sport?
Jimmy Welker: I began playing football during my freshman year of high school and continued in college at Louisiana State University. I played two years in the Arena Football League. With regard to coaching, this is my 11th year, but I鈥檓 starting my 2nd at Ocean View.
What are your expectations for the 2022 season, and how has your team been working toward them?
Welker: I expect us to fight like we did last year and improve our overall execution. Through our new strength and conditioning program, we hope to get our bodies ready physically.
Who are three players to watch, and how will they contribute to the success of this season?
Welker: Offensive/defensive lineman Alexis Ayona plays a big factor in our ability to run the football and get after the passer. O-lineman Keiki Leuta is crucial in our ability to move the ball and protect the quarterback. And our quarterback, Frankie Armenta 鈥� who also serves as our safety 鈥� is a guy who consistently makes sound selections with the ball. He is one of the most consistent players I have seen in my time, both offensively and defensively.
What kind of legacy would you like to leave as a coach?
Welker: It doesn鈥檛 matter to me if my name is remembered; it matters if I am able to positively impact the lives of these athletes. I want them to know that I care about them and their successes, both on and off the field.
How can the Huntington Beach community support OVHS Football?
Welker: Just support the kids, show up to games and cheer them on. Encourage their success, whether we win or lose.
