Bishop Brossart football team has sights set on a regional championship
ALEXANDRIA, Ky. — Competing for the title of regional champions. It鈥檚 a big deal, especially to the 2021 Bishop Brossart High School football team.
鈥淲e had a lot of boys who had a lot of experience as younger players, which hadn鈥檛 happened a lot here,鈥 said head coach Paul Wiggins proudly. Last season was the first time in the football team鈥檚 history that they were undefeated in the regular season, winning the District Championship but falling just short at Regionals.
鈥淕oing into it, we were a bundle of nerves because we had never gone into a championship 鈥 Winning was unbelievable,鈥 explained Wiggins, who was named Coach of the Year in all of Northern Kentucky. The previous year, the team made it to the district championships but were forced to forfeit because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite losing some senior players, Wiggins is cautiously optimistic about the upcoming football season for Bishop Brossart.
鈥淲e鈥檝e got some experience coming back, but we鈥檙e going to ask some young guys to do some big things,鈥 he said. 鈥淎nd with that there鈥檚 always a certain level of uncertainty.鈥
One thing Coach Wiggins can be certain of is the continued level of excellence coming from the parents and the fans.
鈥淚 love the parental support,鈥 Wiggins said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 not unlike any other high schools per se, but the support we get is quite amazing.鈥
Some players to watch this season, according to Coach Wiggins: Sam Willike, Evan Orth, Nolan Jordan, Austin Schadler, Eli Twehues and Brayden Ketron and Derek Martin. Wiggins even admits that with such a young team, in all likelihood he may end up starting a sophomore quarterback.聽
The change in line-up and age of the team is just another reminder of what Wiggins tells his team; that football is a sport of constant struggle. It鈥檚 a sport that relies on teamwork and trust in your fellow player. That鈥檚 why Wiggins said team-building and bonding is so important.
鈥淵ou鈥檝e got 11 guys out there and if one breaks down, the fence could fall,鈥 he said. 鈥淸Football] teaches you to rely on the person next to you and trust in the person next to you.鈥
These are skills Coach Wiggins hopes the players will take with them off the field as well. Whether they end up playing professionally or just look back at this time fondly as adults, Wiggins reminds his team that 鈥渇ootball is a microcosm of life, and you can control your destiny.鈥
Here鈥檚 to another great football season at Bishop Brossart, coach!
