Q&A with Marian High School lacrosse player, recent graduate Charlotte Mustion

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. — Charlotte Mustion, 18, recently graduated from Marian High School. She played on the lacrosse team at Marian from freshman through senior year. Charlotte鈥檚 love of playing lacrosse started at a young age. She played for Brumby from 5th – 8th grade. Charlotte is passionate about lacrosse because the game is all about skill and precision. She shares, 鈥渢he amount of skill it takes to play lacrosse makes the game so much fun because it allows players to continue to get better every day. We always have the chance to have better stick skills and a harder shot, and once you try out new skills in a game, it鈥檚 the best feeling ever.鈥 I had the opportunity to ask Charlotte about her lacrosse career thus far and what she has learned from playing for so many years.

What are your personal goals within your athletic dreams?

Charlotte Mustion: Throughout my career, my goals within lacrosse have always been to benefit my team. Whatever position my coach put me in, I tried my hardest to play the best game I could play for my teammates. Our motto for our season this past year was, 鈥淧lay as a team, win as a team.”

What is your biggest challenge in your sport, and what do you do to manage this challenge?

Mustion: The biggest challenge in lacrosse for me was the mental game. When our team would be down by a few goals, and everyone was giving up, we would struggle to play our best and win. When that would happen, we would call a timeout and we would tell our teammates to, 鈥淧lay our game.鈥 This meant that no matter how much we were down, not to give up and to keep persevering because if we 鈥減layed our game,鈥 we could win.

What was the best advice you were ever given?

Mustion: The best advice I was ever given was from my dad. He always used to tell me to, 鈥淟eave it all out on the field.鈥 No matter what the score was, he taught me that putting forth my best effort was the greatest thing I could do.

Do you have a pregame ritual you follow?

Mustion: I played midfield and took the draw for my team, so before I went up to take it, I would talk to my other midfielders and we would give each other words of encouragement. We met in the circle and would quickly say good luck, then get ready to play.

What do you like to do outside of your sport?

Mustion: I always love being active when I鈥檓 not in season. Every day I try to either go for a run or workout. I feel that I always feel my best when I鈥檓 active, and playing lacrosse has given me this love.

What has being a member of a team taught you?

Mustion: Being a member of a lacrosse team for 8 years has taught me how to put forth your best effort for others. Lacrosse isn鈥檛 a solo sport, it consists of a field of 12 players, each put there to benefit the team as a whole. Being on this team has shown me how to contribute to the good of a group of people. My teammates are my biggest supporters, and I always make sure I give everything I have for them.

What is the best piece of advice you received from a coach or mentor?

Mustion: The best piece of advice I received from a coach was to always respect everyone. Whether it was a teammate, referee, or opponent, we had to show respect for all. This definitely has carried on in my life past lacrosse, and it鈥檚 a reminder that every human deserves respect and kindness.
