Canyon View Colts boys golf team win back-to-back state championships
WADDELL, Ariz. — Arnold Palmer once said, 鈥淪uccess in golf depends less on strength of body and more on strength of mind and character.鈥
Undoubtedly, the athletes on the Canyon View Colts Golf Team have the winning combination, as they have won their second straight state title, defeating the Via De Marie Crusaders by 11 shots.
Coach Steve Lynch is extremely proud of his team, and justifiably so. This is the school鈥檚 first and second state title in team history. He goes on to tell us a little about the team鈥檚 leaders and their backgrounds:
Evan Cross is known as 鈥淢r. Clutch鈥, as he shot a 3 under par 69 in the State Tournament under 30-40mph wind conditions. Evan has an incredible short game and is extremely consistent in his playing. His consistency is a tremendous help to his teammates, as they naturally feed off his calm demeanor. Evan鈥檚 qualities are rounded out with his humility and strength of character which is based on integrity.
Nolan Brunner, aka, 鈥淭he Striker鈥 due to his amazing ball striking skills and his ability to rise to challenges. He finished second in the State Tournament in 2021 at the Grand Canyon University golf course. Although he was tied for first place, he was edged out in a playoff by Basis player Trevor Lewis who is now a member of the Embry Riddle University Golf Team. Nolan continues to be an amazing player and score near the top of every event.
Louis Johnson has overcome personal adversity all year long. Just three weeks prior to the State Tournament, Louis broker his wrist in an accident at school. However, he was determined not to let this hold him back, and he played in one of the tournaments 1-handed and finished in the top 15. During the State Tournament, Louis finished with an impressive score of 80. He tied for second on the team score and was extremely inspirational in the win. He received the honor of 鈥淢ost Inspirational Player鈥 on the team. Louis has matured both as a player and a person through his time on Canyon View Golf.
Caleb Lynch played some his best golf at the end of the season with strong effort at the State Tournament. His score of 84 was instrumental as he shot even-par for the final 5 holes and was able to hold together an impressive round in the tough conditions that were presented. Calen鈥檚 humor is what everyone on the team has come to love about him as he has a wonderful attitude no matter the circumstances. Caleb was the most improved player and a very talented young man.
Finally, Jacob Eisenhower, nicknamed 鈥淭he Grinder鈥 due to his ability to hold on and grind out some great rounds throughout the season despite having a rough start. On one occasion, Jacob started out his round with a double bogey on the 1st hole on a windy day at the Antelope Hills North course Jacob finished at 2 over and was up and down all day. He is a true competitor and a great inspiration for the team.
All these young men have made tremendous progress over the last year not just in their golf games, but in their personal perseverance as well. The Canyon View Colts Golf Team is truly a group of young men that embodies strength of body, mind, and character.
