Wilmington native Summer聽Beesley joins UNCW women鈥檚 soccer team

WILMINGTON, N.C. — Local product聽Summer聽Beesley, who starred at nearby John T.聽Hoggard聽High School, has returned home to play for the聽UNCW聽women’s soccer team following one season at George Washington. Beesley, a 5-5 defender, spent last year聽with the Colonials where she played 864 minutes across 18 contests with eight starts. She tallied five shots, three of which were on goal, in her lone season in the nation’s capital.

“We are excited that Summer is a聽Seahawk,” said聽UNCW聽fifth-year Head Coach聽Chris Neal. “She now has a year of experience at the Division I level, and that will certainly be important as she prepares to compete for us in the Colonial Athletic Association. Summer is an aggressive and skilled, wide player. I think that mentality will fit our playing style well.”

鈥婣 four-year聽letter winner聽at聽Hoggard,聽Beesley聽anchored a Vikings defense that allowed 10 goals and produced 12 shutouts across 18 games as a senior. The Wilmington, N.C., native scored eight goals and dished out six assists for the Vikings, who finished 15-2-1 and reached the 4A East Final in the 2021-22 season. For her efforts,聽Beesley聽was named the 2021 Mideastern Conference Player of the Year as well as the 2021 Coastal Preps Defensive Player of the Year. She was a two-time All-State, All-Region, and All-Conference performer with the Vikings. Beesley聽played with the Wilmington Hammerheads youth club under coaches Craig Johnson and聽Will Heaney, a volunteer assistant coach for聽UNCW.
