Sailors end 2021-22 School Year with a Bang, Look Forward to Facility Upgrades in 2022-23
The Class of 2022 finished the school year on a high note with a slew of all-state athletes as well as OK Green Conference and Greater Muskegon Athletic Association championships.聽 No accomplishment, however, was greater than Demitri Roberson鈥檚 MHSAA Division 1 state championship in the long jump.聽 Roberson went into the weekend just hoping to place in the top 8 and secure an all-state nod.聽 His winning jump of 23鈥 6 戮鈥 was over a foot longer than his previous best and 8 inches from the state record.聽 Roberson will play football, and most likely long jump, at Saginaw Valley State University.聽 Below is a summary of athletic accomplishments from the school year.
- 9 Conference Championship Teams
- 5 Individual Conference Champions
- 4 GMAA Championship Teams
- 84 First-Team All-Conference OK Green Division Athletes
- 1 MHSAA District Championship Team
- 8 First-Team All-State Athletes
- 7 Academic All-State Teams
- 10 Academic All-State Individuals
- 1 Individual State Champion
The 2022-23 school year will feature some important athletic facility improvements for the benefit of our athletes, coaches, and spectators.聽 To kick off our 60th year of football, the Sailors will take on Manitowoc-Lincoln from Wisconsin at the newly-renovated Sailor Stadium in the 鈥淏attle of the Badger鈥 on Friday, August 26th.聽 The addition of artificial turf as well as a brand new sound system will vastly improve the game-day experience for all of Sailor Nation, including the mighty Sailor Marching Band, who will host a band festival at Sailor Stadium this fall.
In the spring of 2023, spectators at baseball and tennis will benefit from the addition of safety netting above the baseball backstop.聽 This completion of this project will minimize the risk of foul baseballs leaving the baseball field and entering the playing and viewing area for tennis.聽 This is a carefully-planned solution to a decades-old issue at Mona Shores High School.
A Final Note: An Important Message about Referees
On a final note, understand that every sport is experiencing a shortage of referees.聽 Older officials are retiring and younger adults are not signing up to replace them.聽 There are two things that we as an athletic community can do to help this situation:聽 The first and most obvious is go to and register as an official in your favorite sport.聽 If this is simply not possible for you, then please remember that officials are human beings who naturally make mistakes.聽 They are also the only people at the contest who do not have a personal interest in the outcome.聽 Please understand that regardless of whether or not you agree with their decisions, Sailor Nation will always treat officials with respect.
