IJAMSVILLE, Md. — A Q&A with Matt Byrne who is the offensive coordinator for Urbana High School Football.

How long have you been coaching?

Matt Byrne: 14 years coaching, experience at various levels from youth league up through high school.

What is your background in this sport?

Byrne: Played QB at College of William and Mary as well as Damascus High School (2 state runner-ups as a player). Played QB and represented the state of Maryland in the 1991 ‘Big 33’ win vs Pennsylvania.

What are one or two things that the team does in training that are keys to their success?

Byrne: Great effort and attitude, make life-long relationships with their teammates.

Please describe the most memorable games/tournaments/championships your team has won.

Byrne: Winning the Youth Superbowl, beating Broad Run.

How do you encourage the team after a disappointing loss?

Byrne: Always a lot of positives to take away from any loss, build on them, correct mistakes and wins will follow.

Describe your proudest coaching moment.

Byrne: Fortunate to have coached this senior class for 5 years in row from 8th-12th grade. Very cool to watch them grow to become great young men.

What is the biggest life lesson you’ve learned from being a coach?

Byrne: You can only control your effort and attitude, that impacts everyone around you.

What legacy do you hope to leave as a coach?

Byrne: Someone who worked hard and helped the boys learn how to better handle anything they choose to do in life.

Byrne: Proud to be a small part of Urbana HS Football.
