Get to know San Joaquin Memorial golfers Sofia Hein and Dallas Renteria
FRESNO, Calif. — Teammates Sofia Hein and Dallas Renteria from San Joaquin Memorial have been spending their summer not only enjoying some time off from the hustle and bustle of a busy school life but practicing and competing in their sport of golf. Most recently, the duo took on the Clovis Cup Tournament this past June.
As an athlete, Dallas lives by the motto 鈥渘ever surrender, never fully satisfied鈥�. Translating to her daily routine, Renteria is dedicated. An early morning Crossfit starts her day off on the right foot, 鈥渨hipping [her] into shape鈥�. Following a long school day, she then takes to the golf course, usually for about three hours, to truly master her craft. The days can be long and challenging, but without challenge, Dallas might risk satisfaction, something she never fully wants, as she dares to push herself. Her daily routine, though, is not completely about golf, as she feels time for family and friends is very important, and her 鈥渇avorite part of the day鈥�.
When it comes time to compete, Renteria has a few rituals and words she lives by, just to make sure she is performing at her best. Pregame, she listens to a set playlist. Getting in the right headspace is of the utmost importance for athletes, and music helps Dallas tune out the distractions of day to day life. On top of this, she tries to 鈥渇ocus in the moment鈥�, advice from her mentor, Luke Harrelson. Grounding herself in her shoes on the green means that the only thing that matters is her and her shot, which she aims to perfect with every single swing.
After high school, Dallas hopes to play for USC women鈥檚 golf, something that has been a dream of hers for some time now. Beyond that, she dreams of being a doctor, something she will no doubt accomplish with her determination and will to work.
Sofia鈥檚 rule as an athlete is to 鈥渓ive by honesty鈥�. Honest work is what makes her the athlete she needs to be. Others in her life describe the honest athlete as 鈥渄etermined鈥�, and for good reason. While golf has always been part of her routine-one that starts early in the morning during the school year, and ends daily on the range, with or without mandatory practice-there was a brief stint of time where Hein had to take a break from her passion. Due to an injury sustained to her ankle in May of 2021, she was unable to continue her sport. A broken ankle equated to surgery, and later an almost four month long recovery period. Claiming she felt 鈥渄efeated and disappointed鈥�, Hein never gave up, and her determination shone through, allowing her to come back for the following season at San Joaquin Memorial and play with her teammates once again. In the worst of times, she found herself rising to the challenge, even now saying she feels stronger than ever. No doubt that the aforementioned honesty Sofia lives by holding herself accountable so as not to cheat herself out of success can be accredited too.
Outside of school, Sofia likes to give back to her community and says she volunteers with her dad in feeding the homeless. On top of that, she also works a job as a hostess at AJ鈥檚 Armenian Cuisine, meaning she knows how to balance the valuable time in her life. Beyond volunteering, working, learning, and competing, Hein hopes to play golf at San Diego State University, a 鈥渦nited and inspiring鈥� team for her. The value of such a team is important, as a team, to her, means commitment, dedication, and family.聽 After college, she hopes to continue her growing golf career and work in agriculture.
Both Sofia and Dallas remain committed to their passion for golf. As long as they continue to dedicate their time and energy at such a high level, the two will no doubt go on to accomplish great things in their golf career and further.
