Frederick Cricket Club encouraging others to play in Urbana area
FREDERICK, Md. — Cricket originated in England during the late 17th century and quickly became a staple of their entertainment, spreading globally over the next 200 years. Initially, the British colonies were the first to adopt the new sport, now the cricket governing body known as the International Cricket Council (ICC) has over 100 member colonies.
But what is Cricket? In the simplest possible explanation, Cricket is a sport played between two teams of 11 players. Similarly to baseball, teams will rotate between one team taking the field and the other team batting. The field is shaped like an oval (approx. 130-140 meters in 2 diameters) with a boundary around the perimeter, and the batting takes place in the center, known as the 鈥榩itch鈥�.
While the game has massive impacts around the world, the US has a comparatively small cricket scene. Even though the first public mention of a cricket game in the US goes back to 1751 in a local New York publishing company, it has remained a local level sport with no real national representation. In current times, those who are passionate for the sport have set up their own leagues, such as the Washington Cricket League (WCL) that was established in 1974 and that plays within the DMV area. My father (Sanjay Trisal) founded the 鈥楩rederick Cricket Club鈥� in 2003 along with a few others who loved the sport, and they are still members of the WCL league with their home ground at the Utica District Park.
However, during the last couple of years, the sport has gained interest in Urbana. The number of interested players in the vicinity has grown to over 200, but a lack of playing facilities has remained a challenge. In spite of this, the enthusiasm of these players has not diminished and there are often small games and practice sessions being hosted in open fields or at baseball diamonds. As a community, we hope to educate and introduce others to the sport and provide the right facilities and opportunities to the players who want to play the game they are so passionate about.
