Q&A with Nevada head football coach Ken Wilson
RENO, Nev. — A Q&A with Ken Wilson who is the head coach for the University of Nevada football team. His hometown is Virginia, Illinois and he graduated from North Central College.
Previous experience in the sport?
Ken Wilson: Played football and baseball in college and coached football for over 30 years at the college level.
Why you love football?
Wilson: Teaches teamwork, discipline, family values, life skills, toughness, sharing, mental toughness, and fighting through adversity. It also brings together people from all different walks of life to compete for a common goal.
What you love about Nevada?
Wilson: I love Nevada and the Reno community because of the closeness and family atmosphere. It has a legitimate caring and small town feel. The university is beautiful and the academics and student experience is second to none.
What would you say to younger athletes starting out?
Wilson: I would say play as many sports as you can. Don鈥檛 let anyone direct you into participating in only one sport. Every sport helps with life skills and athletic skills. They are all fun and valuable.
What about their parents?
Wilson: Embrace all the interests of your children. Let them try many things. Enjoy and be supportive of their interest in extracurricular activities. Don鈥檛 let anyone tell you that you have to embrace one activity early in life.
Best piece of advice you were ever given or gave?
Wilson: I was told to follow your dreams and if you loved what you did, you would never work a day in your life!
Favorite post-game place to eat?
Wilson: At home, grilling out and enjoying my family and our friends.
What you want the community to know?
Wilson: My family and I love this community and want UNR and everyone in Reno/Sparks to know you are important to us and the Nevada Football Program.
