Meet Canyon Crest Academy recent grad, Carlsbad resident Katie Codd

CARLSBAD, Calif. — As one of the top junior players in the country, 18-year-old Carlsbad resident Katie Codd knows what hard work and commitment will get you: the opportunity to play for one of the top college tennis programs in the country, Duke. A recent graduate of Canyon Crest Academy, Katie won the girls鈥 CIF title her freshman year then switched her focus to the bigger tournaments outside of high school. She heads off to college as a blue-chip recruit consistently ranked in the top three nationally.

Katie鈥檚 drive and determination have earned her numerous championship titles including winning the 16鈥檚 Winter National championships in 2019 while also taking second in doubles. She was a finalist in the girls鈥 18鈥檚 at the 2021 Winter Nationals as well. While currently focused on pro level tournaments, Katie and her brother Jackson kept it all in the family when they had the unique opportunity to play mixed doubles together during a pandemic altered high school tennis season, making it all the way to the finals.

Tennis is a sport that challenges both physically and mentally, which Katie embraces. She trains an average of 3 hours per day combining on court training, either with her coach or playing practice matches, with an off-court fitness program. Fitness training has been pivotal in injury prevention and allowed her to sustain high performance year-round.

Katie enjoys the fact that each match is different and presents its own set of challenges. Over the years, Katie says she has learned to manage the pressure and expectations for herself depending on the types of tournaments she plays. Staying focused on her strategy and shot construction independent of her opponent has been critical to her success.

Katie believes that 鈥渢ennis is a journey, and that balance is extremely important to maintain a love for the game and to stay healthy.鈥 Those are wise words that will serve her well as she heads to Duke.

Katie will be participating in the girls鈥 18鈥檚 National Championships at Barnes Tennis Center August 7-14. We wish Katie the best of luck at Nationals as well as in her next tennis chapter and beyond.
