Get to know Byron Nelson baseball player Westin Thompson
TROPHY CLUB, Texas — We profile Westin Thompson鈥攌nown by his teammates as The Big Chill–who is going into his sophomore year at Byron Nelson High School.
Background
I grew up playing baseball and football. When I was six, a football coach stopped my parents and asked if I would play football in the fall. So I signed up and played for three seasons, plus middle school, and loved it. Then, I stopped playing football to focus on baseball all year. I started with a Bobcat select team and now play for the Dallas Patriots.
Achievements
In the spring of 2021, I was selected by the Don Reynolds Baseball group to attend Pathway to Arizona baseball tournament in Tucson. I was selected as a top prospect and chosen to be on one of the inaugural teams to compete in the tournament. I will go back with the same team in September 2022.聽I will never forget my first home run last year also.
Sports Heroes
I have always admired Nolan Ryan. Not only was he an amazing pitcher, but he never backed down from a fight. My pitching coach always talks about how amazing watching him in person was. Yet, all I can do is watch him on YouTube, and it still blows my mind.
Teams & College
My favorite team is the Florida Gators. My dad is from Florida, and my uncle graduated there, so I was raised a Gator fan. I went to their baseball camp last year, which made me want to go there when I graduate.

One thing I like doing is using a massage gun to loosen me up. It seems that works the best on my shoulders and back before warming up. Loud fun music is a necessity that I do on the way to any games, and I noticed our entire baseball team also does that.
School
My favorite is history: I love to watch documentaries about all kinds of historical events.
Parents & Family
They have always been a huge supporter of mine no matter what I wanted to do and put me in good hands, allowing me to grow as a student and an athlete. Now, they let me make certain decisions regarding sports and school, but we always discuss things together. I appreciate that my folks let me have a voice in the conversation. My parents have pushed me to do my best in school since that is most important.
