Dothan HS football team ready for next season behind new head coach

DOTHAN, Ala. — This fall will mark the fourth year of the Dothan City School consolidation. Two of those years were filled with the 鈥淐鈥 word- Covid. Because of that, many school extra-curricular activities suffered, including sports. The Dothan Wolves Football Team was one of the victims. Now it seems we have turned the proverbial corner with Covid and the Wolves have welcomed new head football coach, Jed Kennedy. He had other options coaching 7A teams, but chose Dothan. He said, 鈥淥ne key reason I chose Dothan was because the superintendent told me I would be coming in to build the program, not to re-build it. Where else can you go and build a 7A football program in Alabama?鈥

Kennedy has learned a lot about the 155 young men who will play football this fall. Ninety will be on the varsity team and 65 on the freshman team. He 聽said, 鈥淭he off season has been huge for us. We are getting stronger and faster. Our focus on weight training is beginning to show on the field.鈥

The Wolves are short on returning starting players. There are only six on offense and four on defense. But, there is definitely deep talent on both sides of the ball. Kennedy said, 鈥淥ne of our strengths is going to be our offensive skill 聽positions. We are very experienced and have great depth at running back with Raymon Blackmon, Octavious Thomas, and Tamarion Peterson.鈥 Senior, Carter Davis, will be in the quarterback position. Defensively, Kennedy says the front seven has a chance to be 鈥渞eally special.鈥

Kennedy is very excited about the coaching staff. He said, 鈥淚n 15 years as a head coach, this is the best staff that I have been able to assemble. We have former head coaches, college coaches, local coaches, and coaches from all over the country. They are all committed to getting this thing turned around.鈥 Regarding the schedule he commented, 鈥淲e are in the toughest region in the state. Every game is a matchup where if we don鈥檛 play our best football, we will get beat.鈥

鈥淧eople ask me all the time how the season will go. The one guarantee that I will make is that people will be proud of the brand of football we play. I invite everyone to come out and support the Wolves,鈥 Kennedy said. The team opens up on August 19 at Carroll High School in Ozark.
