Pawling spring sports season wraps up with exciting news for all teams
PAWLING, N.Y. — The Pawling Central School District鈥檚 2022 spring sports season ended with a long list of stand-out individual accomplishments and team successes.
Pawling High School鈥檚 Track and Field team sent three athletes to compete at the state NYSPHSAA Championship meet at Cicero-North High School in Syracuse. Senior Noah Brightman captured first place in the 800M making him the New York State Champion with a blistering speed of 1.54.聽 Junior Julianne Hickey finished tenth in the state for Girls D2 100M Hurdles. Senior Will Mann placed ninth in State D2 Shot Put and was the first Pawling thrower to ever reach the state meet.
Brightman鈥檚 State Championship 800M run was four years in the making. As a freshman, he set a goal of bringing the fastest 800M in New York State to Pawling Central School District (PCSD). Brightman found creative ways to continue his training, after the COVID pandemic led to the cancellation of numerous track meets. 鈥淩unning is difficult at any time but during the COVID seasons, it was so tough. My parents and two brothers trained with me,鈥 said Brightman. 鈥淚 couldn鈥檛 have done it without them.鈥
Throughout the season, Pawling鈥檚 Track and Field team outperformed, with seven PHS spring track records broken and numerous new personal bests for the student-athletes, including:
- Noah Brightman: School records in the 1600M, 800M, 1500M and one-mile.
- Will Mann: School records for the shot put and hammer throws.
- Julianne Hickey: School record in the 100M hurdles.
Overall, the boys team won their 20th League Championship in 22 years, while the girls team placed third 鈥 despite having only three members. In addition to Brightman, Mann and Hickey, PHS had several other Track and Field League Champions:
- Senior Dante Pena in the 100M and 200M.
- Junior Evan Mascia in the 110H.
- Sophomore Sebastian Or茅 in the pole vault.
- Noah Brightman, Dante Pena, Chris Monroy and Joe Mignone in the boys 4×400 relay.
Athletic Successes Abound
Track and Field was not the only PCSD varsity team to experience success in the spring. The Girls Varsity Softball team went 14 and 3 and were crowned League Champions, advancing to the Sectional Semi-finals. Sophomore Mikaela Mammola was named League Pitcher of the Year and received an All-Section Honorable Mention. Josie O鈥橪eary, also a sophomore, was awarded League Player of the Year and was selected to the All-Section team.
Freshman Henry Hauser was the youngest golfer from Pawling to qualify for the Section One Championship Tournament in May. He advanced to the final round of the Sectional Championship Tournament at Westchester Country Club 鈥 one of only three freshman golfers to advance that far.
Pawling athletes were nominated as the Poughkeepsie Journal鈥檚 鈥淎thlete of the Week鈥 throughout the spring, including Noah Brightman, Will Mann, Julianne Hickey and Mikaela Mammola. On June 6th, numerous student-athletes were recognized by PCSD for playing three sports and maintaining a 95-plus GPA. The following senior student-athletes will continue their athletic careers at the college level:
- Kendall Arnold: Division III Field Hockey at Connecticut College.
- Noah Brightman: Division I Track and Field at University of Buffalo.
- Alessia Cioffi: Division III Soccer at Manhattanville College.
- William McCarthy: Division III Football at SUNY Brockport.
- Alyssa Lamberty: Division III Lacrosse at Roger Williams University.
- Noelle Vitro: Dance performance at Slippery Rock University.
School District Breaks Ground on New Turf Field
PCSD鈥檚 student-athletes will have a new turf track and field to call home in fall 2022. On June 7th, PCSD administrators and board members donned hard hats and picked up shovels to officially break ground on the multi-purpose athletic track and field at the Pawling High School and Middle School campus on Wagner Road. The new athletic facility is part of the first phase of a four-stage capital improvement project approved by Pawling voters in December 2020. It will be a community gathering point and a state-of-the-art addition to the district鈥檚 campus. The architect of the project is CSArch, with assistance from landscape engineers The LA Group. The Palombo Group is the construction manager for the project.
鈥淭his is not the first step in the process. This is the next step in our long-term planning about what matters to our community,鈥 said PCSD Superintendent Kim Fontana. 鈥淭hank you to everyone who rolled up their sleeves and made their voices heard. I can鈥檛 wait to see everyone under the lights in 2022!鈥
