‘Last Chance U’ standout Delrick Abrams Jr. playing in USFL
TAMPA (BVM) – Delrick Abrams Jr. wasn’t featured as prominently as some on Netflix’s hit series ‘Last Chance U’ during his time at Independence Community College, but the former standout corner is like many of his former teammates who are looking for ways to keep the dream alive.
The former Colorado and Independence star found himself playing in the recent USFL season after being drafted in the eighth round by the Tampa Bay Bandits. The 6-foot-3 Louisiana native was able to rack up 39 tackles on the season as the Bandits finished up the year with a 4-6 record.
Before making an appearance in the USFL season, Abrams starred at the collegiate level. During his time at Independence, he was a part of the Jason Brown-led Pirates, who enjoyed a 9-2 record during Abrams’ sophomore season. Abrams would help the PIrates to a league title, defeating fourth-ranked Northeastern Oklahoma A&M in the Midwest Classic Bowl for the school’s first bowl game victory.Â
Behind his career 61 tackles and four interceptions, the once-unranked cornerback was able to rise up the junior college rankings, coming in as the No. 85 overall JUCO player . Abrams would transfer following his two years with the program and after fielding offers from the likes of Arkansas, Boise State, Mississippi State, and West Virginia, would choose Colorado, where he was able to shine as a Division I prospect.Â
In his two seasons with the Buffaloes, Abrams would combine to start in 18 of his 20 games, racking up 89 tackles, 15 pass break-ups, four quarterback pressures and one forced fumble. The impressive showing would lead to an opportunity at the next level where Abrams would get his chance on the NFL stage.
After going undrafted following the 2020 NFL Draft, Abrams would sign on with the Atlanta Falcons, later getting a chance on the team’s practice squad. After being elevated to the active roster, Abrams would get a chance to play in three games throughout the year before signing a reserve/future contract for the 2021 season. The following season, Abrams would get an opportunity to join the Los Angeles Rams practice squad before being waived by the club.Â
His time in the NFL would set up his most recent endeavor in the USFL. With a season behind him, Abrams is hoping he can parlay his 2022 season into another future job. As team’s prepare to set their training camps rosters for the upcoming season, the former Independence star is hoping he can land on another NFL roster.Â
