Get to know Pomperaug softball player, Southbury area resident Julia Carter
SOUTHBURY, Conn. — Julia Carter has been playing softball since fifth grade, her two primary positions being pitcher and second base. She鈥檚 won numerous tournaments with her travel team, the last one was the 2022 14U Adirondack Winter Tournament. Julia鈥檚 performance on the field secured her a place on the Pomperaug Varsity team roster as a freshman.
When she isn鈥檛 tagging opposing players coming into second base or striking them out at the plate, she spends her time teaching younger kids the fundamentals and rules of softball. Julia started by giving helpful tips to players who would ask, then during summer camps she would help with specific skill building stations. Now, Julia volunteers by helping the 10U Southbury Park and Rec team.
鈥淲hen I met the kids, some had never thrown a pitch in their life,鈥� Julia revealed. 鈥淎nd three weeks later, they won their first game!鈥�
During the pandemic Julia started her own Instagram account dedicated to softball. When she couldn鈥檛 meet with her team or coaches she started recording herself pitching. She would play back the videos in slow motion, carefully studying them to critique herself in an effort to improve her skills. Now she has almost ten thousand followers and gets questions from girls all over the world.
鈥淚 receive a lot of positive feedback from kids and coaches. They use my drills in team practices and even on their own,鈥� Julia exclaimed. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a pretty cool feeling to hear how I鈥檓 helping people who I鈥檝e never even met.鈥�
What started out as a desire to help a few players turned into a way to help softball players on a global field.
Her passion and drive for the game is palpable before she even steps onto the field and really comes alive when she plays. We are excited to see what she does next and wish her luck in future softball seasons!
