4-star RB Jeremiah Cobb brings explosiveness, speed to Auburn
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (BVM) 鈥 Jeremiah Cobb isn鈥檛 particularly outspoken. In fact, he鈥檚 rather reserved for one of the most sought-after running backs in the country.
The Montgomery Catholic rising senior prefers to let his game do most of the talking, and it speaks volumes.
鈥淛eremiah doesn鈥檛 really talk much trash; he鈥檚 not one of those guys who are really vocal,鈥 Montgomery Catholic head coach Kirk Johnson said. 鈥淟ast year in the playoffs, one of the teams went on social media and kind of got all of his social media information: his sister, his mom and all this stuff. They kind of said that he wouldn鈥檛 make it out of the first quarter.
鈥淗e had one of the best games of his season. He ran the ball real hard, was very physical and at the end of the game, he just posted a picture and kind of said 鈥業 made it out of the first quarter.鈥 It was good to see his personality open up because he鈥檚 not that type of guy. Watching him play that game with a chip on his shoulder was good to see.鈥
The extra motivation Cobb was given ahead of the 3A semifinals resulted in a dominant performance.
The running back ran for 186 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries as the Knights dominated Hillcrest in the second half to win 41-6. While impressive, Cobb鈥檚 performance that night was anything but a surprise.
It was his 11th game of the season with at least 120 rushing yards and multiple rushing touchdowns. Cobb finished his junior season with 2,163 rushing yards and 30 rushing touchdowns after running for 2,013 yards and 18 touchdowns as a sophomore.
Cobb鈥檚 immense talent and explosiveness are best exemplified by a two-week period in the middle of his junior campaign. He rushed for an eye-popping 311 yards and two touchdowns in a 42-0 win over Montgomery Academy. The next week, while being held to just 68 yards on four carries, he made his presence felt through the air by catching three passes, all for touchdowns, for 116 yards.
鈥淗e鈥檚 got elite speed and he鈥檚 not big on juking or anything like that; he鈥檚 a one cut and get vertical type of guy,鈥 Johnson said of Cobb. 鈥淭hat makes him very dangerous.鈥
Not only do those elite skills make Cobb dangerous, but they also make him highly coveted.
A top 15 player in Alabama for the Class of 2023, according to , Cobb collected offers from the likes of Arkansas, Florida, LSU, Michigan, Oregon and others before narrowing his top three down to Auburn, Clemson and Tennessee. But on July 1, he elected to stay within the state and commit to the Tigers.
I鈥檓 officially committing to Auburn University, WDE!

鈥淯ltimately, it boiled down to the fact that he felt at home,鈥 Johnson said of Cobb鈥檚 decision. 鈥淗e felt like it wasn鈥檛 anything different than what he鈥檚 been in, so having a 45-minute drive and having familiar faces made him feel better.
鈥淎uburn鈥檚 getting a complete kid. I鈥檓 not one to continue to talk about all the field accolades because at the end of day, I don鈥檛 want him to be defined by just being a football player. There鈥檚 plenty of great football players out there who do nothing for the world. He鈥檚 a young man who鈥檒l be at the Boys and Girls Club, he鈥檒l help tutor a kid that needs help; he鈥檚 that type of young man.鈥
Johnson said he鈥檚 looking forward to seeing how Auburn utilizes Cobb鈥檚 versatile skill set, but not before one final run with Montgomery Catholic. After advancing to the 3A semifinals in back-to-back seasons, Johnson and the Knights have the loftiest of goals for the fall.
鈥淲e鈥檙e going to try our best to put a great product out there and that鈥檚 what we plan on doing,鈥 Johnson said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e blessed that we have guys like Jeremiah Cobb and not only him because he鈥檚 not the only one. We have another senior in who鈥檚 a phenomenal football player, our junior quarterback and tons of other weapons.
鈥淲e plan on putting a product out on the field to where anything short of a state championship is a disappointment.鈥
