Q&A with Niceville High School T&F athlete, recent graduate Megan Hague
NICEVILLE, Fla. — A Q&A with Megan Hague who is a recent graduate of Niceville High School. She mainly participated in track & field but also enjoyed soccer and weightlifting.
What are your personal goals within your sport/athletic dreams?
Megan Hague: Some day I dream to work hard enough to be one of the best known athletes and make it into the Olympics.
What is your biggest challenge in your sport, and what do you do to manage this challenge?
Hague: The biggest challenge in my sport is learning how to adapt and overcome when you get to a breaking point, to try to learn new methods with becoming stronger and finding better strategies on how to throw.
What was the best advice you were ever given?
Hague: The best advice I was ever given was no matter how hard things get, there鈥檚 always a clear path ahead and to never give up on what you thrive so much for.
What do you love about your sport?聽
Hague: I love my team, the way it’s an individual sport at times but when it comes down to it, it’s always the people around you that matter most.聽 No matter where you are there is always going to be someone better than you that works harder than you and you have to learn how to adapt and outwork them to be the best.聽 That鈥檚 what makes a great athlete.
Do you have a pregame ritual you follow?
Hague: I always make sure I have a clear mind and never let things bother me before I go into what I’ve been training my entire career for. Get some of my favorite music on, and be alone by myself until I am ready to compete.
What do you like to do outside of your sport?聽
Hague: I spend most of my free time with friends and family, because that is one of the most important things to me. That little bit of extra time to myself i love to go surfing and always love to find cool projects to do around the house.
What has being a member of a team taught you?聽
Hague: Being a member of any team has taught me that having the courage and strength to show your teammates that pain is only temporary goes a long way for anyone – to be able to sit there and suffer and get right back up, and to get others up, to prove what strength truly is.聽 Niceville鈥檚 track team is a great team, and not just because (like everyone says) we have pure talent.聽 But because we will be out there doing drills a million times to make sure we get it perfect.聽 This team has taught me that the moment you tell yourself you can’t, you’ve already given up.聽 But the moment you say 鈥淚 will鈥 changes everything that happens in your future.聽 I truly don’t know where I would be right now if someone hadn’t looked me in the eyes and said 鈥測ou can and you will鈥.
What is the best piece of advice you received from a coach or mentor?聽
Hague: You and only you are your own enemy. 聽 You are the only one who will defeat yourself at the end of each and every day.聽 You are the best that there is if you train like it.
Describe a mistake you made while competing and how you overcame it.聽
Hague: A mistake I have made was allowing other athletes to get in my head and not being able to believe in myself even when nobody was rooting for me.聽 I took for granted my self worth and at times it threw me down when it shouldn’t have.聽 I needed to remember that I have always worked my hardest, not only to be the best, but because I want to show myself that I have earned it and deserve it.
