Malik Muhammad searching for home after ‘Last Chance U’
LOS ANGELES (BVM) – Malik Muhammad gained notoriety for his splash plays around the rim for the East Los Angeles College Eagles men’s basketball team on the hit Netflix series “Last Chance U: Basketball.” While Muhammad had issues such as energy and coachability to work on at the time, it was clear throughout the entire series that the talent was there, it was just a matter of him playing to his full potential.
After the team’s season ended abruptly due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, when the show also ended its documentary season, Muhammad was set to find his new home. While the athlete has made a couple of high-level collegiate stops, he is still searching for a landing spot today.

During his final season at ELAC, Muhammad showed off his ability in a increased capacity as he began to take reps over more highly-touted teammate Joe Hampton. This increased time helped the sophomore as he would finish the year starting all 30 games and averaging 9.6 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.9 blocks while shooting 56.4% from the field and 70.7% from the line. This helped Muhammad earn an opportunity with the Central Michigan University Chippewas.

With the Chippewas during the 2020-21 season, Muhammad played in 19 of the team’s 23 games and made 14 starts. For the season, Muhamad averaged 5.5 points and 5.8 rebounds in 21.6 minutes per game, leading Central Michigan in blocked shots and ranking No. 2 in the Mid-American Conference in blocks per game. He would also finish ranked second on the team in offensive rebounds and third in defensive rebounds while shooting .542 overall from the field.
While his time at CMU was relatively successful, Muhammad decided to pursue other opportunities, entering the transfer portal and joining the team at Southern Utah University.

Muhammad would play for the Thunderbirds as a senior during the 2021-22 season, but would not see a lot of playing time as he would only play in 10 of the team’s 35 games, averaging 0.7 points, 1.5 rebounds and 0.4 blocks.

This lack of opportunity again had Muhammad reevaluate his current role and enter the transfer portal in April. So far, Muhamad has not yet found his next home.

While he is still looking for his next collegiate destination with a year of eligibility left, Muhammad is preparing to take advantage of the NCAA’s recent Name, Image and Likeness opportunities. Signing with A&P Agency, Muhammad will look to grow his brand following the attention he received from his Last Chance U exposure.

Though he doesn’t have his next college selected yet, Muhammad is not done with collegiate basketball just yet. Looking for opportunities both on the court and off of it, expect Muhammad to try to make the most of any chance he is given.
