Lumen Christi athlete Lily Melnick doesn鈥檛 let Type 1 diabetes stand in her way

JACKSON, Mich. — Lily Melnick is going to be a Junior at Lumen Christi High School. She stays active with playing Volleyball, Basketball, and Tennis. She was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 4 and has been managing the disease now for 12 years. She started by playing tennis with the Jackson Rec department and began competing in the 6th grade. She manages her glucose levels with the help of her Dexcom G6 (CGM) and her T-Slim Insulin Pump.

She says that the support of her siblings and teammates are a big part of her success on the tennis court. When her blood sugars drop below her targeted range she goes to her favorite drink body armor and peanut butter crackers. She is also supported by her Head Coach Michael Calderone who is also a Type 1 Diabetic and knows about the struggles of managing the disease.

One thing Type 1 Diabetes has taught her is that it is OK to ask for help and that if you have the right support system then you are capable of accomplishing anything!
