Lake Orion HS survey finds that students focus more on school than sports

LAKE ORION, Mich. — Straight A鈥檚 and Sports are often perceived as difficult to juggle around. It鈥檚 either study hard or swing bats.

Surveys given by Lake Orion High School have shown that through five years students intended on concentrating on their studies rather than consuming valuable time with sports. Public School Review specified that after-school sports can benefit a student鈥檚 motive to get things done rather than putting them off for another hour and risking incompletion. By making sure they make time for training or are to keep consistent high grades, students can learn to manage time wisely to acquire what they want. After-school sports are also a benefit to gaining friendships.

Junior, Anais Pillot, who plays both soccer and track for Lake Orion High School agrees with the surveys.

鈥淎fter-school sports allow you to connect with peers with similar hobbies,鈥 Pillot said. 鈥淐onnecting with peers outside of an educational environment allows for students to recognize the similarities and differences of their fellow classmates, and bonding with other teammates will help students step outside of their comfort zone and express themselves.鈥

Amir Ianis, a Sports Psychologist at Rochester University, states that sports improve the functioning and recovery of those parts of your brain that inhibit your feeling of stress and therefore the production of stress hormones. Moderately intensive endurance sports improve overall wellbeing.

鈥淏y moving, and keeping your body in shape, your skin improves, and your muscles become stronger. Not only do you feel fitter, but you also look fitter,鈥 Ianis said. 鈥淲hen you feel powerful, you radiate it, protecting yourself from low self-esteem.鈥

鈥淓ndurance sports improve your stamina,鈥 鈥淭he functioning of your heart, lungs, blood, and blood vessels improves and therefore you can transport more oxygen to your muscles. When your endurance improves, you become less tired from exertion and stay fit longer,鈥 Ianis continued. 鈥淪tudies have shown that exercise increases blood flow to the brain and helps the body build more connections between nerves, leading to increased concentration, enhanced memory, stimulated creativity, and better-developed problem-solving skills.鈥

Psychologist Dr. Jared Wood, at Lake Orion High School, mentions that an after-school program benefits mental health because it helps students connect with others. It also allows for students to be free of any textbooks, allowing the mind to relax and focus on physical health.

鈥淭eam sports help you stay with a positive mental attitude. You鈥檙e working out almost every day so it鈥檚 something of physical activity. It also promotes leadership, and companionship, and builds communicative trust,鈥 said JoJo, a SafeEd monitor at Lake Orion High School. 鈥淪chool Programs promote diversity, bringing in students of all ethnic backgrounds, thoughts, feelings, and perspectives. It allows for students to meet new, different, and unique students much like themselves, and can bring out the best of people.鈥
