Q&A with Ellensburg High School head track & field coach John Arlt
ELLENSBURG, Wash. — A Q&A with John Arlt who is the head track and field coach at Ellensburg High School.
How long have you been coaching?
John Arlt: 30 years
What are one or two things that the team does in training that are keys to their success?
Arlt: Athletes have a consistent routine they do everyday that helps them focus and develop over the season.聽 They understand that hard work is extremely聽important, but also recovery and rest is just as important at the right times.
Please describe the most memorable games/tournaments/championships/moments of this year鈥檚 team.
Arlt: The State Championships are always very memorable, we had some outstanding performances by a number of individuals, School Records broken by Kate Laurent in the 1600 and 3200; she also went under the State Meet Record in the 3200 for 2nd place, and of course the Girls 4×100 Relay winning the A2 State Championship was fun to watch; Jules Child, Elaine Joyce, Bel Montes, Carsyn Arlt.
Describe your proudest coaching moment with this year’s team.
Arlt: Just watching all of the progress the kids made throughout the year is very rewarding.聽 They work so hard and put in a tremendous amount of time to improve themselves and each other, it is fun to watch.
What legacy do you hope to leave as a coach?
Arlt: That every athlete knows they can call me up 20 years from now and talk about Track & Field…and the good old days!
