Melbourne alum Jake Walsh makes MLB debut with St. Louis Cardinals
MELBOURNE, Fla. — For the second time in two months, a local Brevard County baseball player has been called up to join a Major League Team!聽 This month, we are very proud to brag to the world about Mr. Jake Walsh of MLB鈥檚 St. Louis Cardinals!
Jake, a proud lifelong Brevard County resident, received his 鈥楥all鈥 to the Major 海角社区 right before midnight on May 10th of this year from the St. Louis Cardinals, and then made his Major League debut the next day, May 11th, in St. Louis against the Baltimore Orioles.
Jake grew up as a proud member of the Melbourne High School Bulldog baseball team for all four years of his high school career.聽 He was fortunate enough to be guided and coached through his high school years by Head Coach Pete Donovan, who is a highly respected member of our own Brevard County baseball community.聽 When we contacted Coach Donovan about Jake, he told us 鈥淛ake is an outstanding young man!聽 He was the hardest working player in our Melbourne High School Bulldog Baseball program!鈥澛 During Jake鈥檚 sophomore year of high school, Coach Donovan tells us that he was the ace pitcher on the mound, leading his Bulldog teammates to an appearance in the State Final Four Tournament down in Fort Myers.聽 Coach Donovan added, 鈥淚 am confident that if Jake gets the opportunity, he will succeed!鈥
Walsh, who is right-handed and listed at 6 foot 2 and 228lbs, grew up in Indialantic and played his youth baseball up through the ranks in the ‘South Beaches Little League’ system.聽 After graduating from Melbourne High School, Jake played his college ball at Jacksonville State University, Eastern Florida State College, and Florida Southern College.聽 Following his junior season at Florida Southern, Walsh was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 16th聽round of the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft!
After Walsh signed with the St. Louis ball club, he made his professional debut with the Johnson City Cardinals of the rookie-level Appalachian League.聽 Walsh spent 4 of the next 5 seasons excelling on the mound at the various minor league levels.聽 After undergoing ‘Tommy John Surgery’ and recovering from it during the 2019 and 2020 seasons, Jake returned to the mound with a vengeance! His fastball then topping out at 100mph!聽 That, my friends, is a Major League fastball!
And so, on May 11th, 2022, Jake made history by striking out 4 batters in less than 2 innings of work in his St. Louis Cardinal Major League debut. 聽Jake states (OK, maybe his Mom told us this), that his favorite moment of his Major League Debut experience was when his Mom, Missi Wellman, ran down onto the field after the game and hugged him!聽 Jake, us Brevard County residents are as proud of you as your Momma is!聽 Congratulations on your accomplishments, and we wish you continued success!
