Bismarck鈥檚 Eli Mojonnier, ISU commit wins back-to-back 800m state title

BISMARCK, Ill. —聽Eli Mojonnier became the 2022 IHSA Class 1A State Champion in the 800-meter run at the state competition held on May 28. He was also the 2021 IHSA Class 1A State Champion. Eli became the first athlete in the history of Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin High School to win back-to-back state crowns. Mojonnier became just the fourth Class 1A runner to repeat in the 800m in the last forty years.

Having missed qualifying for the finals in the 1600m, Mojonnier said he came onto the track with one race and one goal. In the 800m, he battled for the lead after the first lap, earlier than he would have liked. He knew he was running against some competitors with good 400m times, and he didn鈥檛 want the race to come down to a final sprint. 聽Mojonnier burned out his competitors and maintained first place all the way to the finish line.

Mojonnier鈥檚 winning time was a personal record of 1 minute, 54.33 seconds. Beacon Academy鈥檚 Julian Aske was second with a time of 1:54.53.

Mojonnier will continue his athletic career by running track at Illinois State University.
